Diplomatic_Reception_01 Belgian, EU officials attended diplomatic reception in Brussels

9 June 2010, Brussels - High-ranking Belgian and EU officials attended the diplomatic reception at the Philippine chancery hosted by His Excellency Enrique A. Manalo, Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg and Head of the Philippine Mission to the European Union, commemorating the 112th anniversary of Philippine Independence.

Despite the heavy rain, the event was well-attended by more than 200 dignitaries from the diplomatic corps, including Ambassadors from the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), the South Asia, Far East, South East Asia (SAFESEA). Ambassador Peter Martin, Chief of Protocol of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Annalisa Gianella, personal representative of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Baroness Catherine Ashton, were among those who graced the occasion. Mr. James Moran, Director for Asia of the European Commission, who was the EU's chief negotiator for recently concluded RP-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) also attended the event.

Other officials from the Belgian and Luxembourg governments, the European Commission, Council and the Parliament also attended the celebration, together with those from the private sector, academe, think tanks, and the Filipino Community. They congratulated Ambassador Manalo for the successful event and admired the art deco features of the chancery.

This was the first diplomatic reception hosted by Ambassador Manalo since assuming office in February. The event became especially significant since it coincided with the proclamation of2010_Diplomatic_Reception_02 His Excellency Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III as President-elect of the Philippines. It was also the inaugural reception at the newly renovated Philippine Chancery.

Ambassador Manalo emphasized this fact in his remarks, noting: "Since my assumption as Ambassador, the completion of the chancery's renovation has been a top priority, and I am pleased to be the first Philippine Ambassador to hold office in this beautiful, newly-refurbished maison de maître".

The Philippine Chancery in Belgium is among the first six countries in Europe that the Philippine Government purchased. The others are in Madrid, Spain; Paris, France; Rome, Italy; London, United Kingdom; and Bucharest, Romania.

The Chancery, which had been under renovation for the last 11 months, is now equipped to host exhibitions, receptions, meetings and conferences. It was re-designed to better serve the public and provide a better working environment for the Embassy personnel. The building was constructed in 1910 and is located in a prime residential area of Brussels. Its central feature is Diplomatic_Reception_03the multi-colored stained glass dome in the art nouveau style, Brussels being the heart of this artistic movement in the early 1900s. Another interesting feature is the art nouveau central brass staircase. The conference room, called the "Bulwagan ng mga Pangulo", retains the original wood-carved panelled wall and a hand-painted fresco ceiling.
