Filipinos in Belgium and Luxembourg celebrate the 112th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence


15 June 2010, Brussels, Belgium His Excellency Enrique A. Manalo, Philippine Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Head of the Philippine Mission to the European Union, joined the celebrations of the Filipino communities in Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the 112th anniversary of Philippine Independence.


A total of more than 2500 Filipinos, with their families and friends gathered in the four separate celebrations held in Belgium, which were organized by the FilipinoPIC_2010_6 Driver’s Association in Belgium/Kapisanan Para Sa Kalayaan (in Basilique de Sacre Coeur, Koekelberg) on 12 June 2010, Council of Filipino Associations in Flanders (in Brugge) on 13 June 2010, Council of Filipino Associations in Belgium (at Hilton Hotel in Brussels) on the evening of 12 June 2010 and Filipino-Belgian Communities in East and West Flanders (in Ghent) on 13 June 2010.


The Philippine-Luxembourg Society likewise organized the celebrations in Luxembourg on 12 June 2010.  Mr. Alain Kinsch, Philippine Honorary Consul General a.h., also hosted a reception for the Filipino community in Luxembourg on 08 June 2010 at the Ernst & Young Office.


PIC_2010_5The festivities provided an opportunity to display and sell Philippine food and products.  Filipino culinary delights such as pork barbeque, beef kaldereta, longganisa, danggit, pansit, puto and dinuguan were among the best-sellers at the event. The Filipinos and guests alike had the chance to taste the famous roasted pig or lechon.



The guests and visitors were regaled with various Filipino modern and folk dancesPIC_2010_4 performed by the Filipino-Belgian cultural groups.  Many prizes, including round trip ticket to the Philippines, were raffled off during the tombola and added excitement to the events.  At the event in Ghent, the organizers also held a Mrs. Philippine Independence Day 2010 pageant to raise money for various charities in the Philippines.


The celebrations were the first major Filipino community events attended by PIC_2010_7Ambassador Enrique A. Manalo after his assumption as Philippine envoy to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union.


The Embassy officers and staff attended all the celebrations to show their support for the Filipino community.
