15TH ANNIVERSARY OF DR. JOSE RIZAL
30 December 2011-- H.E. Victoria Bataclan, Philippine Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and European Union led the Philippine Embassy and the Filipino community in commemorating the 115th anniversary of Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal today. The Order of the Knights of Rizal (KOR) in Belgium co-organized the series of activities that started with simultaneous flower offerings at the Rizal markers in Brussels and Gent and which ended with the dinner of the KOR to celebrate the centennial of the organization's establishment.
After visiting the markers, the Philippine Embassy officials, officers and members of the KOR and of the Kababaihang Rizalistas, along with their families, proceeded to the Embassy to view the documentary film about Rizal entited "Pluma".
Following the film showing, another flower offering was made at the Rizal bust at the Embassy garden. The Ambassador then formally opened three Rizal exhibits at the Embassy: a painting exhibition of Rizal paintings by well-renowned Filipino artist Rene Robles, a rare Rizal stamp collection from 1946 to 2011 owned by KOR's Sir Lucien Spittael, and another collection of Rizal stamps and Philippine bank notes featuring Rizal owned by KOR's Sir Dominiek Segaert.
During the program, the Ambassador expressed her congratulations to KOR on its centennial year and encouraged them to strengthen in Belgium its youth arm called the KAPARIZ (Kabataang Pangarap ni Rizal). "It is our youth that spell the difference for our nation's continuous progress. We at the Embassy very much wish to include the participation of our Filipino youth in nation-building and it is in this spirit that we have invited the youth present today to watch the documentary Pluma and to read some excerpts from the most famous literary works of Rizal", Ambassador Bataclan remarked.
The head of the various KOR chapter heads, as well as that of the Kababaihang Rizalistas, then gave their respective inspirational messages. Selected Filipino-Belgian youth then read excerpts of some of Rizal's most famous works including Mi Ultimo Adios. The Ambassador hosted a reception for all the participants after the program.The festivities were capped off by KOR's special centennial dinner celebration, which was held at the Best Western County House Hotel located not far from the Embassy.
