UP SINGING AMBASSADORS TAKE BELGIUM

22 August 2012 - The U.P. Singing Ambassadors, in cooperation with several Filipino-Belgian Communities in Belgium, staged a series of concerts, goodwill performances and outreach programs in Belgium from the 10th August and which is set to end on 5th September.

The group's European concert tour is also intended for their participation in the 60th Concorso Polifinico Competition Guido D'Arezzo in Italy from 20-26 August.  It was in 2001 that the group won this competition's Grand Prize, being the first Asian choir to do so.

Prior to the concerts in Belgium, the group shared a traditional lunch with Philippine Ambassador to Belgium, H.E. Victoria S. Bataclan along with their Filipino-Belgian host families from Charleroi on 7th August. The gathering was made more meaningful with the UPSA rendering a handful of songs from their repertoire for the concerts.

To show the Embassy's support in this worthwhile cultural endeavour, Ambassador Bataclan led the Embassy team in attending the concerts and promoting Philippine culture, art and tourism in these cities:

  • Charleroi on August 10, organized by the Filipino-Belgian community in Charleroi led by Mr. Nelson Andres and Ms. Enriquetta Pimentel. It was held at the Auditorium Réne de Cooman Hôpitale, CHU André Vésale in Montigny-le-Tilleul. Mr. Fréderic Consoli, a member of the Cabinet of Charleroi Mayor Eric Massin represented the Mayor in the event. Ms. Maggy Morlet, City Counsellor from the Commune de Lobbes also graced the event.
  • Verviers on August 11, was highlighted by the holding of a Vernissage of the Philippine painting exhibit entitled "FILIPINISM: What Makes Art Filipino" at Vervier's Cercle des Beaux Arts. The exhibit was organized in cooperation with the Germany-based Filipino Art Impresario Mr. Virgilio G. Cuizon, Managing Director of Kapatiran at Ugnayan ng Natatanging Sining at Talento ng Pilipino (KUNST) Group of Galleries and President of KUNST PILIPINO. The Municipal Office of Verviers was co-organizer. The exhibition featured the artworks of known nine (9) Filipino artists, namely: Rafael Arenillo Cusi, Ernesto "Aris" Bagtas, Ireneo "Rene" Robles, Oscar Ramos, Jojo Austria, Rigor Esguerra, Max Balatbat, Samuel Penaso and the late Francisco "Paco" Gorospe Sy. The exhibit runs until the end of August.
  • Spa on August 14, was held at the Eglise Notre Dame et Saint Remacle and organized by the Filipino Catholic Community in Spa. Special guests were the Mayor of Spa, Mr. Joseph Houssa and Mr. Jacques Vandesbosch, Parish Dean of Spa.
  • Liège on August 17, was held at the Salle de Spectacle du Trianon with the participation of the chorale group from Liège "Les Valeureux Liegois". The Mayor Mr. Willy Demeyer held a welcome reception for the Ambassador and the two chorales before the concert.

Each concert, which featured some traditional choral pieces and original Pilipino music amazed Belgians and Filipinos alike and showcased the versatility of the group's repertoire.

The concerts provided the Embassy with an opportunity to promote Philippine tourism through the setting up of a "It's more fun in the Philippines" corner at all venues. In many instances, town/city Mayors and other local officials had expressed strong support to the group by hosting welcome receptions for the UPSA and the Embassy officials.

The group is still scheduled to perform in Ans (August 30), Visé (August 31), Statte (September 1), Aubel (September 2) and Leuven (September 5). The Embassy shall continue to provide its support to these performances.
