Brillante Mendoza Chairs International Jury of the Brussels International Independent Film Festival
10 November 2012, Brussels - Mr. Brillante Mendoza, known best for being the only Filipino Director that received a "Best Director" Award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, has again represented the country well by chairing the international jury of the recently-concluded 39th edition of the Brussels International Independent Film Festival (BIIFF).
The BIIFF, which was held from November 6 to 10 in five cultural venues of Brussels (Flagey Studio 4, Vendôme Cinema, Bozar, Daarkom and Espace Magh), is recognized as one of the most important film events in the international scene. Selected movies had competed in certain categories thereby making Brussels "the meeting point" for filmmakers from around the world during these five days.
Despite not having Filipino entries this year, the Festival showcased the Philippines in two ways, first through a Canadian film called "Off World" that featured Filipino actors in a Philippine setting and second, through Mendoza's lecture on film-making entitled "Master Class". At the closing ceremony, "Off World" received the "Special Mention Jury Award."
"Off World," is a movie shot in the Philippines in 2009 by Canadian Director Mateo Guez. It talks about one man's search for his true identity. It is about a young man from Toronto who was adopted from the Philippines at an early age and who returns to Manila's slum area called "Smokey Mountain" in search of his roots.Philippine Ambassador to Belgium H.E. Victoria S. Bataclan hosted a reception at the Embassy in honor of the organizers and participants of the Festival who have been steadfast partners of the Philippines in the industry. Beforehand, she rallied the Filipino community in Brussels to support the Festival in particular by attending the lecture session of Mendoza alongside Henry Burgos.
