BAYANIHAN PERFORMS IN BELGIUM
14 June 2013 - The Bayanihan Dance Company, led by its Executive Director Suzie Moya-Benitez , was one of the 12 participating cultural groups at the Festival Mondial de Folklore de la Ville de Saint-Ghislain (World Folklore Festival of Saint-Ghislain) held in Belgium from June 02 to 11.
As a gesture of support, Philippine Ambassador to Belgium Victoria Bataclan attended on June 04 the Festival's opening gala reception where she was able to meet again Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo as well as the Hainaut Province Governor Tommy LeClerq, Belgian Chamber of Representatives member Franco Seminara, and Saint-Ghislain Mayor Daniel Olivier.
These key officials had conveyed to the Ambassador their pleasure to have witnessed the world-class performance of the Bayanihan Dance Company and have highlighted the group's charm and grace-traits that have been many times attributed to Filipinos.
At the courtesy call of Ambassador Bataclan on Mayor Olivier before the reception, Mayor Olivier expressed the town's fondness towards the Bayanihan and its gratitude for its participation in this year's festival. Bayanihan first participated in the 25th year of the Festival in 2008 and was also able to perform at the Expo Brussels in 1958.
The 10-day Festival featured typical Philippine dishes in the evening of June 06.
Festival organizer Daniel Coustry explained that the Festival annually brings to Saint-Ghislain some 350 artists and 20,000 spectators in its effort to draw attention to Saint-Ghislain and bring together peoples from different culture in a spirit of harmony and friendship through dances and music.
Apart from the Philippines, the Festival featured performers from Brazil, Georgia, Peru, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Benin, Ukraine, and Belgium.The Bayanihan will also be in Milan, Italy and Budapest, Hungary on this European tour.
